The 2025 Met Gala happened this week, with the theme “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” which draws inspiration from Monica L. Miller’s 2009 book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity. The theme was also reflected in the dress code, “Tailored for You,” which encouraged guests to interpret the concept of dandyism and tailoring in their outfits this year.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s exhibit that is tied to this year’s Met Gala will organize “12 sections, each representing a characteristic that defines dandy style: Ownership, Presence, Distinction, Disguise, Freedom, Champion, Respectability, Jook, Heritage, Beauty, Cool, and Cosmopolitanism,” according to Vogue.
